I chose A and P by John Updike because I felt it was the short story I was able to grab on to the best. I am not sure if that is because I paid the most attention to the details of the story over the other ones or I remember our class discussion on the story the most. Either way, when considering I had to visually represent the story in a visual manner, I wanted to choose the story I felt best I was able to follow and get the message. Otherwise, my work would be inaccurate or not correct to the subject matter of the short story. I felt the story was written in such a descriptive way that it was easy to follow along with where the characters were and what they were doing. The ending also added some room for thought as to what he was thinking when he quits his job and goes into the parking lot to find the girls that disappeared from sight. I enjoy stories that leave a touch of speculation to debate about. It offers an opportunity for conversation like we had in class about what occurred and what the author might have been trying to say or illustrate throughout the story.
In terms of the apprentice book itself, I was limited with resources and material. As a result, I wanted to come up with a creative way to illustrate the story to make up for the lack of artwork. I will never proclaim myself to be an artist, but I do believe I think a touch outside the box which I hope is reflected in the book. I decided to use quotes from A and P with a modern day iPhone emoji to reflect what is going on in the story/quote. I thought it would be a different way to tell a story, especially since emoji use is popular in phone conversations in today’s world. The emojis I chose are what comes up in an iPhone when you use a word to search for an emoji (I use the google keyboard which enables this feature, I am not aware if you can also do this on the regular iPhone keyboard.) I searched either the emotion or action in the story and gathered what I found and drew it on to the book. I hope this was a creative and different way to express A and P.
