“Diving Into the Threats to the Merrimack River”
This article discusses the issues that are currently facing the Merrimack River. The river runs through the city of Lowell, the city for which my hometown of Chelmsford is a suburb. Moreover, parts of the campus of Umass Lowell are set on the river as well. According to the text, the river is significantly polluted. Sewer overflow and litter are the main causes. When I was in 8th grade, we took a field trip on the river to learn about its nature and the challenges it faces being polluted. We also learned how the canals were built off of the river to power the Lowell Mills in the 1700s and 1800s. The Merrimack is important to the ecosystem of not only the campus, but the 100 miles stretch the river covers in New England. The article detailed how there are programs through UMass Lowell one can volunteer to join the effort to keep the river clean.
